2016 Casino News Round Up

If, at the end of 2015, the gaming industry made a collective New Year’s resolution to turn up the action, entertainment, and excitement, they’ve certainly kept it. From delivering fantastic new games, paying out huge amounts in winnings, and making strides toward VR casino action, 2016 has been a players’ year.

If this, along with constantly increasing online and mobile casino revenue around the world is anything to go by, the past 12 months have laid the foundation for a truly spectacular 2017.

Take a look at a round up of this year’s most memorable moments with Casino Epoca!

Game Release Highlights

Leading software provider Microgaming certainly didn’t drag its heels when it came to game releases in 2016. Instead, it hit the ground running, with the release of three hot new games in January.

Those games were followed up with exciting releases month by month. The games got bigger and better as the year rolled on, and we have no doubt that you can expect even more thrills from them next year.

A few of the new Microgaming games that really stood out for us include Lucky Twins, a nine-reel video slot with Wilds and Scatters; the frightfully entertaining Peek-A-Boo with 40 lines, a ghost meter, and free spins with 1024 ways to win; the visually stunning Wild Orient slot; and the ultimate zombie apocalypse video slot, Lost Vegas.

Magical Mega Moolah Wins

Mega Moolah, the progressive online and mobile slot famous for its unbelievable real money jackpots, lived up to its reputation in 2016. A lucky spin of the reels made a magical year for several players.

On 5 November, Marcus Goodwin won a whopping $11.6 million playing the game, and on 28 August, a player known as D.P. won almost €8 million when playing the slot on her iPad.

Prior to D.P’s big win, Rawiri Pou from New Zealand won more than NZ$10 million in June, and an anonymous player won €6.9 million in April.

Casino Industry Excellence Awarded

Another highlight of 2016 was the annual International Gaming Awards. This year’s event was highly competitive, and not one of those who emerged winners could be said to be unworthy.

The Innovator of the Year award went to Microgaming, while IGT scooped up the Best User Experience in Mobile award. Studio City Macau was named the winner of the Casino/Integrated Resort of the Year award.

The Corporate Services Supplier of the Year award went to Paysafe. Check out the Casino Epoca banking page to find out more about the payment methods we accept.

Portugal’s First Online Casino

2016 was the year in which Portugal welcomed its first locally operated and regulated online casino. A newcomer to online casino jurisdiction, the country had previously licensed a couple operators based in other countries.

Estoril Sol Casinos, the new Portuguese-run gaming site, is operated by Macau’s Stanley Ho-chaired Estoril Sol, the operator also responsible for the land-based Casino da Povoa, Casino Lisbon, and Casino Estoril.

Towards Virtual Reality

The 2016 ICE event gave good reason for players to be excited about the near future in casino gaming. It was at the event that Microgaming lifted the lid on its thrilling plans for virtual reality games, and gave attendees a glimpse ahead.

This took the form of the developer’s VR roulette game, which uses the Oculus Rift headset and the Leap motion controller, as well as a display that showcased 3D gaming.
