Ocean’s 8 is among the most eagerly anticipated releases of the year, and will premier in the United States and the United Kingdom in June 2018. The stellar cast includes Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Awkwafina, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling and Helena Bonham Carter.
Bullock stars as Debbie Ocean, Danny Ocean’s estranged sister, assembles a group of 8 women to pull off a heist when she is released on parole. The movie promises to be the latest in an increasing collection of entertainment titles featuring strong female characters, with the Tomb Raider slot and Mad Max: Fury Road being 2 other examples.
A Nod to the Other Ocean’s Films
Ocean’s 8 is described as both a spinoff and a sequel to the first 3 Ocean’s movies, and the similarities in the storyline between this film and Ocean’s 11 are too strong to be ignored. However, it seems to be about more than that too.
In the wake of the #metoo and #timesup campaigns, a movie with such a strong cast of female superstars is expected to have a very positive impact. Sarah Paulson has described being on set as “empowering”, and watching women pull of what is typically regarded as a man’s activity – multimillion dollar theft – is an important message about equality. Nobody should steal, but it’s important to know that women can do it just as well as men!
All the women who Debbie Ocean assembles are chosen for their technical skills, not because they can use their feminine wiles to dupe men. This is actually a triumphant sign of respect for both genders, and could be an indication that all the recent upheavals really are changing things. There might be a long way to go, but at least there has been a start.
Top Talent at Every Level
If Sandra Bullock plays the female equivalent of Danny Ocean, Cate Blanchett is this movie’s answer to Brad Pitt’s character in the first 3 instalments. The chemistry between Bullock and Blanchett is as obvious as what was seen between Clooney and Pitt, and should be a joy to watch for the full-length film.
In addition to the actors, Ocean’s 8 has an impressive team behind the cameras too. Clooney himself is the producer, along with none other than Steven Soderbergh, and is directed by Gary Ross of the Hunger Games fame. Ross also co-wrote the script with rising star Olivia Milch.
With all of these high-profile names in the mix, it’s no wonder fans around the world are expecting big things from Ocean’s 8. The list of stars who are making cameo appearances includes Dakota Fanning, Kim Kardashian West, Kendall Jenner, Kylie Jenner, Adriana Lima, Serena Williams, Anna Wintour, Olivia Munn, Katie Holmes, Zac Posen, Zayn Malik and Matt Damon. If the trailer is anything to go by fans won’t be disappointed, though they will have to wait until June to find out for themselves!
