There is no question that 2018 was a big year for football fans, with a number of incredible matches and tournaments played, many of which had fans off their seats, and cheering in the bandstands. But as it stands, 2019 is set to be as equally as big a year, with dates already set for the key events that are sure to surprise, excite and amuse.

These are some of the up and coming key football events for 2018. Keep in mind, of course, that not every event can be listed, so these are just the ones most likely to get the most attention – for now!

AFC Asian Cup

Kicking off early is the AFC Asian Cup, which runs from the 5th of January to the 1st of February 2019. Seeing the biggest teams from the region come together and battle it out for an ultimate champion is sure to be just the start to the football year that fans will be hoping for.

FA Cup Final

The FA Cup, or the Football Association Cup, now sponsored by Emirates, is already underway. Teams have been battling it out, with the tournaments set to see the final match played on May 18th, 2019. Fans are already debating who will be crowned the winners, and it need not be said that tensions will be high going into the new year.

UEFA Champions League Final

Little gets football fans as excited as the UEFA Champions league, with the 2018-2019 season being no different. The final for the current season is set to play out on June 1st 2019. As an interesting bit of side information, this is the first time VAR will be used in the Champions League, otherwise known as a Video Assistant Referee. Its implementation will be seen from round 16 onwards, and although already seen in the World Cup last year it still serves to spice up the show. All eyes will be on current champions Real Madrid as they vie for the Cup.

Africa Cup Of Nations

The Africa Cup of Nations, now on its new schedule so as not to clash with the FIFA World Cup, will play out from June 15th to July 13th. It is not yet known where the tournament will be held in 2019, but an announcement is expected to be made in the near future.

Women’s World Cup

This is still a relatively new tournament, with only seven events having been held up until this point. The Women’s World Cup is set to be held in France in 2019, and will run from June 7th to July 7th. The United States team is the only team to have won twice so far, and will be looking to make it a third time lucky.
